Committee of Concerned Journalists Traveling Curriculum
The Committee of Concerned Journalists is a consortium of reporters, editors, producers, publishers, owners and academics engaged in strengthening the the future of the profession. The group launched the Traveling Curriculum in February 2001 to continue a national conversation among journalists to clarify and reinforce the values and standards that set journalism apart from other forms of communication.
Training Mission:
The Traveling Curriculum program is designed first and foremost to help journalists develop a pattern of critical thinking. A grant from the Knight Foundation allows the Committee to bring workshops to individual news organizations at virtually no cost. We typically work with groups of 20 to 40 from all levels and departments. The trainers themselves are a diverse team of more than 20 experienced journalists from a variety of media, all of them recognized and respected names in the profession. Lecture is limited. The program tailors itself naturally to each group and setting. Participants are given scenarios drawn from real-life situations faced by news organizations and asked to work in small groups brainstorming solutions to the issues raised. Facilitators also introduce various techniques and strategies we have collected from journalists around the country.
