APME NewsTrain

NewsTrain is a new national training program that focuses on the development of management and editing / coaching skills in frontline editors. The program, taught by nationally recognized professional trainers, takes a practical approach - providing common sense advice that mid-level editors can use right away to improve their performance in the newsroom. NewsTrain held 40 regional workshops around the country in its first three years. The two-day program emphasizes editing for print and online, and includes a discussion of credibility and ethics. Local sponsors - newspapers, the AP, press associations and universities - customize the program by adding topics of special interest to them.

Training Mission:
NewsTrain follows a 2002 landmark study, "Newsroom Training: Where's the Investment?" in which journalists cited the lack of training as their top source of dissatisfaction on the job. Research also has shown that providing professional development to journalists makes good business sense because it helps news organizations with the retention of staffers.

NewsTrain, a project of the Associated Press Managing Editors, fills one of the largest gaps in newsroom training, teaching essential management and editing skills to frontline editors. The core curriculum can be customized to meet local needs and also has the benefit of traveling to the editors' front doors, saving news organizations both time and the expense of travel.
